Hunt
AFRICAN FEATHER, FUR & SCALE SAFARIS offer more than 30 species of which 20 are antelope to the international sportsman for both rifle and bow hunters. Hunts are conducted by expert, experienced and legally qualified licensed professional hunters (PH) under the leadership of outfitter Willie Vermaak. We promise clients fun filled, challenging hunts in areas of great natural beauty. Apart from our plains and big game hunts we also specialize in wing shooting, fishing and photographic safaris. We regard hunting as a form of natural harvest that has its rightful place in wildlife conservation. Hunting is to take place in an organized and ethical manner within the framework set by our countries nature conservation legislation and relevant authorities.

Hunting areas are game ranches and conservancies where active, hands on wildlife management result in an abundance of game within a healthy and largely untamed environment. All hunts are based on seasonal quotas and thus early bookings receive priority. We offer hunts in various terrains, ranging from dense bush, open savannah plains and hills.

We offer walk and stalk rifle and bow hunts, still hunts, silent beat hunts, bowhunting from blinds in trees and from ground blinds. We supply well-trained bird dogs, German shorthaired pointer and Drahthaar from imported German lines.

Best time for hunting:
From April through to end October. Wingshooting only 4 x months of May, June, July, through to end of August.

Available Firearms
Regarding a general average hunt for mainly plains game we suggest any medium sized caliber scoped bolt rifle such as .270 Win; 30-06 Springfield zeroed at 100-150 yards with quality constructed ammunition. On open plains hunts we recommend 7mm Rem. Mag or 300 Win. Mag. Zeroed at 200 yards. The 35 Whelen and .375 Win Mag are of course arguably the best all round calibers ever and infinitely suitable for African safaris.
Bow hunters must equip themselves with bows from 60lbs and more, using fixed 3 bladed arrows. Archers shooting distances vary from about 18-30 yards maximum. On average most shots are 22 yards.

Shooting distances on such hunts are quite short, from 70 to 120 yards. This is the classic walk and stalk hunts for which Africa is well known. In mountainous areas a lot of glassing is done from suitable viewpoints and shooting distance quite long, 150 to 300 yards. Open plains hunting normally necessitate long shots, anything from 250 to 350 yards. For hill and open plains game hunts a rangefinder is very practical.
Bow hunts ordinarily are conducted from well situated blinds over waterholes and are either enclosed structures or elevated blinds in trees or platforms.

Gear
Generally 3 x sets of cotton clothing of a dark khaki or green color, sturdy comfortable boots, a jacket or jersey, gloves and a hat will be sufficient. Days are fairly mild and evenings and early mornings cold. A daily laundry service is available. This being said however, hunting in the mountains can be extreme in especially June, July and August and snow may be encountered. Plan accordingly and discuss with us before hunt.
